New Caledonia - April 24, 2005 - Nouméa

Yesterday I tried to go to the Parc Zoologique et Forestier (Zoo-Botanic Garden) but it rained so hard when I was there, before the gates, with tumbling  muddy little rivers on both sides of the hill road, that I did NOT go out of the bus and instead went to the Centre Culturel Tjibau (Tjibau Cultural Centre), named after the assassinated, ex-priest, Kanak leader Jean-Marie Tjibau.

The Centre is an exceptional architectural project by Renzo Piano, connecting in an extremely original approach, as usual, Kanak culture and innovative architecture.

Inside there are, this I fond not hugely interesting, pieces of Kanak contemporary artists and loans from other museums of old Kanak culture.

The gardens, I read, are interesting but they were off limits because of the pounding rain.

Ieri ho tentato di andare al  Parc Zoologique et Forestier (Parco Zoologico e Forestale) ma pioveva talmente forte quando ero lì, davanti ai cancelli, con fiumiciattoli furiosi di acqua fangosa ad entrambi i bordi della strada di collina, che NON ci sono entrato e sono invece andato al Centre Culturel Tjibau (Centro Culturale Tjibau), intitolato a Jean-Marie Tjibau, ex prete, assassinato leader politico Kanak.

Il centro è un eccezionale progetto architettonico di Renzo Piano, che fonde con un approccio eccezionalmente originale, come al suo solito, la cultura Kanak e architettura innovativa.

All'interno, che non ho trovato estremamente interessante, pezzi di artisti Kanaki contemporanei e prestiti da altri musei di antica cultura Kanak.

I giardini, leggo, sono interessanti ma erano off-limit per la pioggia battente.

I’ve booked for a couple of weeks in three of the Iles de la Loyauté  (Loyalty Islands), Ouvéa, Lifou and Maré. Ouvéa above all SHOULD be fantastic. I leave Monday.

Over there they told me there’s not any Internet connection, and perhaps even the cell phones are not working.

I’ve now a local phone, thanks to hugely kind Stéphanie (thanks again Stéphanie). But I think that not even those are working well.

So, all in all, be prepared for a couple of weeks of no connection and no updating of this site.

I hope, with Poseidon’s blessing, to come back with beautiful stories and pictures to show you all.

Ho prenotato per un paio di settimane in tre delle Iles de la Loyauté (Isole della Lealtà), Ouvéa, Lifou e Maré. Soprattutto Ouvéa DOVREBBE essere fantastica. Parto lunedì.

Lassù mi hanno detto che non c'è nessuna connessione Internet, e forse anche i telefoni cellulari non funzionano.

Ho adesso un telefono locale, grazie alle enorme gentilezza di Stéphanie (grazie ancora Stéphanie). Ma credo che nemmeno questi funzionino bene.

Così, tutto sommato, preparatevi ad un paio di settimane senza nessun collegamento e senza aggiornamenti di questo sito.

Spero, con la benedizione di Poseidone, di tornare con magnifiche storie e fotografie da mostrare a voi tutti.

New Caledonia - April 23, 2005 - Nouméa

I keep feeling like Ulysses. Certainly NOT because of his trips but because he was hated by Poseidon, God of the Sea.

Seen the in the ancient times there was not a God for the weather, in Poseidon was summed up all that concerned the Sea and the Ocean.

What I’ve done to dissatisfy him so much I do not know. Some kind of hubris, the exaggerated pride of the humans resented by the Gods?

Or perhaps is this feeling that's hubris?

So, it has to be Poseidon that keep pouring over me rain, and lashing me with howling winds that try to keep me pinned in the house (some pictures below I've been able to take anyway) but are in any case VERY effective in keeping me out of the water.

Anyway, optimism, optimism, I keep remembering myself. Even when it’s not so easy…

Continuo a sentirmi come Ulisse. Certamente non a causa dei suoi viaggi, ma perché era odiato da Poseidone, Dio del Mare.

Visto che nell'antichità non c'era un Dio per la meteorologia, in Poseidone era assommato tutto quanto concerneva Mare ed Oceano.

Cosa abbia fatto per dispiacergli così tanto non lo so. Qualche forma di hubris, l'esagerato orgoglio degli umani che offendeva gli Dei?

O è forse questa sensazione che costituisce hubris?

Così, deve essere Poseidone che continua a sommergermi di pioggia e a fustigarmi con venti ululanti che cercano di tenermi bloccato in casa (alcune fotografie qui sotto in ogni modo sono riuscito a farle) ma che in ogni modo sono  MOLTO efficaci nel tenermi fuori dall'acqua.

In ogni caso, ottimismo, ottimismo, continuo a ricordare a me stesso, anche quando non è così facile...

New Caledonia - April 21, 2005 - Nouméa

Been some days here in Nouméa, more or less closed in house because of the VERY bad weather, with rains every day and harsh winds.

In any case, in the short intervals between squalls, and in the single day before them, I've been in the water of the Ile aux Canards (the Ducks Island), cloudy and sandy but anyway with snappers (Lethrinus nebulosus, Forsskal, 1775), happy, nobody eats them because of the park there, before all, and because of the ciguatera. After that, two-three sea snakes (Lauticauda colubrina, Schneider, 1799), virtually under the legs of the people on the beach, and other coral fish.

Been attacked by an ill-tempered seagull, (no traces of nests or younglings all around).

E' qualche giorno che sono qui a Nouméa, più o meno chiuso in casa a causa del tempo DAVVERO brutto, con piogge ogni giorno e venti molto forti.

In ogni caso, nel breve intervallo tra i temporali, e nell'unico giorno tra di essi, sono stato in acqua nell' Ile aux Canards (Isole delle Anatre), acqua sporca e sabbiosa ma in ogni caso con snapper (Lethrinus nebulosus, Forsskal, 1775), felici perché nessuno li mangia perché lì c'è un parco, prima di tutto, e perché c'è la ciguatera. Dopo di essi, due-tre serpenti marini (Lauticauda colubrina, Schneider, 1799), praticamente sotto i piedi della gente in spiaggia, e altri pesci corallini.

Sono stato attaccato da un gabbiano collerico (in giro nessuna traccia di nidi nè di pulcini).

Been in the Musée de l'Historie Maritime (Maritime History Museum).

Exibits from the old Melanesian times through the Lapérouse expedition (1785) who received from Roi Louis XVI the assignment to explore "toutes terres ayant échappé à l'oeuil de Cook" (all lands forgotten by Cook"), to modern (?) times. Look at the last picture!

Sono stato al Musée de l'Historie Maritime (Museo della Storia Marina).

Esposizioni dai tempi delle migrazioni dei Melanesiani, passando attraverso i tempi della spedizione di Lapérouse (1785) che aveva ricevuto da Re Luigi XVI l'incarico di esplorare "toutes terres ayant échappé à l'oeuil de Cook" (tutte le terre che potessero essere scappate a Cook), fino ai tempi moderni (?). Guardate l'ultima fotografia!

Been also to the Musée Néo Calédonien (Museum of New Caledonia).

Sorry, no cameras allowed inside. Inside important pieces of Kanak and other Pacific cultures.

Sono stato anche al Musée Néo Calédonien (Museo della Nuova Caledonia).

Mi spiace, non erano permesse fotografie all'interno. Dentro importanti pezzi dei Kanaki e di altre culture del Pacifico.

MA, soprattutto, sto aspettando che il tempo migliori per andare alle Iles de la Loyauté (Isole della Lealtà), con le loro incredibili sensazioni così del Pacifico.

E, spero, con alcuni pesci davvero interessanti!
