New Caledonia - May 22, 2005 - Nouméa

Decisions, decisions. I've bought yesterday a ticket for Vanuatu. I should remain there for more or less ten days. After that I should leave for Western Australia.

I do not know what to expect, form a spearfishing point of view, from Vanuatu. I have mixed reports: someone telling me that by now there are few good fish left, and others instead that tell me that it's a wonderful Ocean over there...We'll see!

I'll live, they told me, in a fishermen village without even electricity so, for the next ten days, do not expect any update.

See you after Vanuatu!

Decisioni, decisioni. Ho comprato ieri un biglietto per Vanuatu. Dovrei restarci più o meno per dieci giorni. Dopo di ciò dovrei partire per la Western Australia.

Non so cosa aspettarmi, da un punto di vista pescatorio, da Vanuatu. Ho resoconti diversi: qualcuno mi dice che ormai sono rimasti pochi pesci belli, e altri invece mi dicono che lassù c'è un Oceano meraviglioso... Vedremo!

Vivrò, mi hanno detto, in un villaggio di pescatori senza nemmeno l'elettricità, per cui, per dieci giorni, non aspettatevi aggiornamenti.

Ci vediamo dopo Vanuatu!

New Caledonia - May 19, 2005 - Maré

Maré, island savage of dramatic landscapes.

Island of big cliffs everywhere and of scarce beaches.

If only the sun could have shine at least some hours, the pictures could have done some justice to this spectacular and beautiful island.

Alas, as you can see in the photos, the clouds were grey and low. And often, in the too short six days stay I remained here, were delivering rain in mournful sheets.

And it was cold! In the nights here I warmly enjoyed a cosy blanket.

Maré, isola selvaggia di panorami drammatici.

Isola di grandi pareti ovunque e di rare spiagge.

Se solo il sole avesse potuto brillare almeno qualche ora, le immagini avrebbero potuto rendere un po' di giustizia a questa isola così bella e spettacolare.

Ahimè, come si può vedere nelle fotografie, le nuvole erano grigie e basse. E spesso, nei troppo brevi sei giorni che sono rimasto qui, si aprivano in tristi cortine di pioggia.

E faceva freddo! Nelle notti ho caldamente gioito di una benvenuta coperta.

The Association has a 6 m Zodiac and a good 130 HP Yamaha engine. They can arrange dives in the best places everywhere in the island itself and even in the far away reefs of the Dudune Island, out of the north-west cape of Maré.

Sono stato ricevuto come un principe da Pierre Pujapujane e dalla sua grande famiglia. E questo solo perché sono un buon subacqueo, perfino prima che avessero la possibilità davvero di conoscermi.

L'Associazione dispone di uno Zodiac di 6 metri con un buon motore Yamaha di 130 CV. Possono organizzare immersioni nei posti migliori ovunque sull'isola e anche nei lontani reef dell'isola Dudune, al largo del capo nord-ovest di Maré.
