Australia - June 19, 2005 - Exmouth

The REAL reason because I'm here is, again, what it's by now My Marlin Quest. In Exmouth every year is kept a Big Game tournament, with a lot of Billfish, Marlin and Sailfish, taken. I'm hoping to find someone taking me out for finding this elusive, enourmous, long-searched-for monster. Oviously, I'm here with my Tuna Gun.

BUT no one, it seems, is really interested in this. Why?

Bacause of my second reason to be here: the Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus). Here in Exmouth, between June and July, there's a seemingly endless procession of them, following the coral spawing season in March and April. It's the only place in the Earth, for what I know, that can guarantee a shark seeing. And the whole town thrives on them. Everywhere there're offers for a whale shark tour. And when I say "everywhere" it's exactly as I say. That placid face with minuscule eyes stares at you in all the supermarkets, in the bakery, in the Internet Points, in almost all the streets of the centre town, from the Ningaloo Nectar bottles of water. Even now, when I'm writing this in my hotel room, stares at me from the guest information sheet hanging from the door.

La VERA ragione per cui sono qui è, di nuovo, quella che ormai è la Mia Ricerca del Marlin. A Exmouth, ogni anno, si tiene un grande torneo di pesca d'altura, con un sacco di rostrati, marlin e pesci vela, presi. Spero di trovare qualcuno che mi porti fuori per trovare questo elusivo, enorme, a-lungo-cercato mostro. Ovviamente sono qui con il mio Tuna Gun.

MA nessuno sembra davvero interessato. Perché?

A causa della mia seconda ragione per essere qui: lo Squalo Balena (Rhincodon typus). Qui a Exmouth, tra giugno e luglio, c'è una ininterrotta, sembra, processione di squali, che seguono la stagione delle ovature dei coralli tra marzo e aprile. E' l'unico posto sulla Terra, per quello che conosco, che possa garantire l'avvistamento di uno squalo. E l'intera città prospera su di loro.

Ovunque ci sono offerte per tour sugli squali balena. E quando dico "ovunque" intendo esattamente questo. Quella placida faccia con gli occhietti minuscoli ti osserva in tutti i supermercati, nella panetteria, negli Internet Point, in quasi tutte le strade del centro, dalle bottiglie di Acqua minerale Ningaloo Nectar. Perfino ora, quando sto scrivendo tutto ciò, mi osserva dal foglio informativo per i clienti appeso alla porta del mio albergo.

Molto, molto di più delle foche, delfini e capodogli in Kaikoura in Nuova Zelanda!

And so one day, finally, after a cancellation due to bad weather, here I am, with my faithfull camera in hand, the fins at my feet, ready to jump in the water to a Whale Shark waiting for me.

The first impression is elemental, it’s huge. It travels with its mouth half opened, the gigantic tail switching slowly in an unstoppable rhythm and, when swims toward you, it gives not away the faintest notion about stopping. Anyway, we all have been warmed about the limit distance set by the Department of Conservation: three meters from the head, four meters from the tail, so I swam under him to take some pictures against the bright surface.

The day is far from perfect. The waves are massive, already a third of the supposed divers are down due to seasickness, hugging themselves in a ball of misery.

The water is NOT what can be defined as clean. A lot of suspension, and that can be expected if you find here a plankton eater, but also a lot of sand.

The dirty water, the vast waves together with the limit distance all calls for bad pictures. And in effect, sadly, at the end of the day, perusing them, I did NOT find a single perfect picture. Some worthy, but I’m far from happy. I start thinking about, perhaps, waiting some days and going again out.

We’ll see.

E così un giorno, finalmente, dopo una cancellazione dovuta al cattivo tempo, eccomi finalmente, con la fedele macchina fotografica in mano, le pinne ai piedi, pronto a saltare in acqua dove uno Squalo Balena mi aspetta.

La prima impressione è inevitabile, è enorme. Viaggia con la bocca semiaperta, la coda gigante che mulina in un ritmo inarrestabile e, quando nuota verso di te, non dà la minima impressione di volersi fermare.

In ogni modo siamo tutti stati avvertiti a proposito delle distanze minime decise dal  Department of Conservation: tre metri dalla testa, quattro metri dalla coda, così nuoto sott'acqua per fotografarlo contro la superficie luminosa.

Il giorno è lontano dall'essere perfetto. Le onde sono massicce, giù un terzo dei supposti subacquei sono stesi dal mal di mare, arrotolati su sè stessi in una palla di miseria.

L'acqua NON è quanto possa essere definita pulita. Un sacco di sospensione, e questo ce lo si può  aspettare se ci trovi dentro un mangiatore di plancton, ma anche un sacco di sabbia.

L'acqua sporca, le onde gonfie, insieme al limiti di distanza, tutto congiura contro delle belle foto. E in effetti, tristemente, alla fine della giornata, studiandole, NON trovo una singola foto perfetta. Alcune sono valide, ma sono ben lontano dall'essere contento. Sto cominciando a pensare, forse, di aspettare qualche giorno e di uscire di nuovo. Vedremo.

Ci sono di gran lunga troppe cose da raccontare così, di nuovo, mi limito alle sole fotografie, che, come di consueto, sono solo una pallida ombra in confronto alle piene sensazioni e ai colori della realtà.

Moreover, I had the luck to find and take pictures of some interesting wildlife!

Per di più, ho avuto la fortuna di trovare e di fotografare alcune interessanti forme di vita selvatica!
